Lewiston’s Very First ‘Youth Poet Laureate’

The Lewiston City Council has chosen 18-year-old Joao Victor, a Senior at Lewiston High School as the city’s first ever “Youth Poet Laureate.”

Victor won Maine’s “2019 Poetry Out Loud” competition with his poem, “Bright Copper Kettles.” He went on to compete in the national finals in Washington D.C.

According to mainepublic.org, the LHS Senior came to the U.S. three years ago from Angola. He is currently seeking asylum.

Victor will be writing and reciting a poem at Lewiston High School’s ‘Night of Excellence,’ on June 4.
